Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Se Review

It appears that producer-director Ashutosh Gowarikar’s achievement is only reliant on epoch sagas. After producing hits like Lagaan and Jodha Akbar, this time he takes his call on a youth-centric revolutionary flick with Abhishek Bachchan and Deepika Padukone playing the lead.
An adaptation of the novel ‘DO AND DIE’ by Manini Chatterjee, the film is a periodical thriller which takes you back to the history of ‘The Chittagong Uprising 1930’ and stresses on India’s fight for freedom. The film portrays the story of the effort and the emotion of the youth during the British rule.
A faction of 64 members under the command of Surjya Sen who is a freedom fighter and leader- educator along with his associates, assail two arsenals in Chittagong, West Bengal hoisting Indian ensign to accomplish freedom and liberate the motherland from the clutches of the British rule. Supporting this posse are our forgotten brave heroes Kalpana Dutta played by Deepika Padukone, Pritilata Waddekar played by Vishakha Singh, Nirmal Sen played by Sikander Kher, Ambika Chakraborty played by Shreyas Pandit, along with other headstrong and courageous revolutionaries. This embarks the blood-spattered expedition of anti-establishment movements, brave break out, terrible captures, thrilling assails, and their eternal bequest.
Ashutosh Gowarikar’s endeavor to portray the Indian history onscreen was good as usual but the movie apart from it being a true story it seems that unnecessary content stretched the length of the movie to an extent of making it quite boring. His endeavor to add a little flavour in the movie by portraying affection between Kalpana Dutta and Surjya Sen and the duo Pritilata Waddekar and Nirmal Sen was uncalled-for thus slightly making it unconvincing.
Abhishek Bachchan’s acting dexterity was appreciable but Deepika Padukone needs an improvement though since her struggle to portray herself as a brave revolutionary was unconvincing as it didn’t come out naturally. Though she looked stunning as a Bengali girl in traditional sarees but an improvement in terms of acting is a requisite.
Other co-actors were quite good in terms of acting and portrayed themselves as a revolutionary quite well on screen. On the whole the film scores an average and can be a one time watch.

★★☆☆☆
